I made this piece during the month of Ramadhan in 2024 in memory and honour of the many Palestinians who lost their lives during the genocide. The pain and suffering that they are going through is beyond belief, and it has weighed heavily on all of our hearts. In times of distress, we turn to God, and no one has shown us that more than they.
I covered the map with prayers from the Qur’an and used patterns from traditional Palestinian embroidery called “Tatreez” throughout the piece. Tatreez is used as a way of preserving heritage and passing on history and stories from one generation to another. In every culture, we have similar ways of honouring our heritage, and for that, the name of the piece is “Common Threads”. Palestine is us, and we are.
