The river is a metaphor for the journey of life. The river of time flows without pause. The river is in constant motion as water flows from its source to larger bodies of water and then mysteriously back to its wellspring again. As we navigate the river of time, we are bound to be grateful for and learn from each moment, no matter how fleeting, with the understanding that we can never go back and that we are all returning to the source.
The idea of the blog was to share my childhood stories, my trials and triumphs but always through the lens of life as art/art as life. With the belief that we can all grow through our experiences no matter how difficult or heartbreaking – because life is worth living no matter how hard it gets. My first post, Bush Dreams was about my childhood growing up by a river and all of the wonder and beauty of that place, that to a child felt like magic.
During that same year I rekindled my love not only for writing but for all things creative. I started painting again and found through that medium, much needed solace. And that is, in brief how art by the river was born.
Art by the River is a dream come true. It is my way of sharing my love and my art with the world. My desire is for people to see how art makes living more enjoyable and how understanding, appreciating and creating art can change your world for the better.
Join me on this journey and make art part of your everyday.
As a self-taught artist, Nimah has been practicing art since 2016 and continues to develop her work as a form of self-exploration particularly rooted in understanding her history and place in the world; using the language of the visual to express emotions and insights that cannot always be put into words.
Nimah’s formal training is as an art historian. She graduated from the Universidad de Oriente, Santiago de Cuba, Cuba in 2007. Upon her return to Trinidad and Tobago, she began working at the National Museum and Art Gallery eventually heading the organization as Curator/Director before leaving in 2013. In 2017, Nimah graduated from the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine, with a Master of Philosophy in Cultural Studies.
She is currently the Senior Curator of the Central Bank Museum, a position which she has held for the past eleven years. At the Bank she is responsible for one of the main outreach arms of the institution, the Museum, its programming and development. She is also responsible for the Bank’s 60 year old art collection which was started in the 1960s. Nimah is an IVLP alumnus in Cultural Heritage Preservation and was also a recipient of a Getty Fellowship to attend the American Alliance of Museum’s Annual conference and be a part of training sessions on Leadership in Museums with other curators from around the world. Nimah has years of experience in museums, art and matters of heritage and sees them as hugely transformative yet undervalued.
My art practice represents the work of unearthing the nature of who I am under the weight of the historical moment in which I was born and the uniqueness and humanness of my own journey; all with the hope of connecting deeply with others. “Art is Everyday”, for as I breathe so do I create and recreate my life by the leave and grace of God.
